Eindhoven, Netherlands/eindhoven050Previous | Home | NextIn 1923 the Philips headquarters and NatLab moved to Kastanjelaan, 1.5 km northwest of the original Philips plant on Emmasingel, and Philips expanded its research and production facilities in this suburb, called "Strijp." In 1921 van Arkel joined Philips and he worked there for 13 years; de Boer joined in 1923 and stayed through the 1930s. The team of van Arkel and de Boer introduced the Department of Materials Research at NatLab. Among other projects they developed ductile forms of unusual metals. Only a year after hafnium was discovered in Copenhagen {LINK:Copenhagen164}, they had developed an effective procedure for separation of hafnium and zirconium and the subsequent preparation of pure samples of the two metals. The chemistry laboratory was the north wing, at the back of this building (out of view). The view is northeast. Courtesy, Frans van der Schoot. |
